Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome to Day One

Congratulations on deciding to try something new. Or maybe it's more accurate to say: congratulations on getting to the point where you've bought a guide and are actually reading it. That's a real step, and it's worth acknowledging. Zine making can feel like a mysterious, artsy world that belongs to people who already know how to do things. But let me tell you right now — a zine is just a tiny, self-published booklet. That's the whole definition. It can be about anything: a comic, a recipe collection, a photo essay about your neighborhood's pigeons, or a rant about a bad movie you saw. Before we start, let's set an honest expectation. This is not the day you produce a masterpiece. This is the day you learn how the physical object works — how paper folds, where pages go, and why it's not as complicated as it looks. You'll likely feel a little clumsy. You might make a fold in the wrong direction and have to unfold and redo it. That's completely normal, and honestly, it's part of the point. The goal today is to build a tiny bit of muscle memory and to prove to yourself that this is something you can physically do.

Here's what you'll need. I'm keeping this deliberately
