You have read the articles. You have the spreadsheet. You have attended the seminar sponsored by a mutual fund company, where the speaker talked about the 4 percent rule and sunsets in Costa Rica. You have a target number in your head, and you have done the math on your current savings rate. You are doing everything right, and you still feel that low-grade hum of unease whenever someone asks, "So when are you retiring?"

That unease is not a flaw in your discipline or a sign that you have not accumulated enough. It is a symptom of the real problem: the conventional approach to retirement planning is built on a false premise. It assumes that retirement is primarily a financial event with a specific date attached, and that if you simply solve the money question, everything else will fall into place. This assumption fails in predictable ways, for predictable reasons, and it is the single largest reason why so many otherwise intelligent, capable people stall out in their planning.
