The Rubicon Gambit
A Novel of Betrayal and Redemption
by Shay Sabbah
Chapter 1: Ghost of Crypto AG
The rain over Zurich didn’t fall so much as it conspired. It slid along the tram wires, beaded on the cobblestones of Niederdorf, and found the one crack in Marta Keller’s umbrella—the one she’d been meaning to fix for three years. A cold trickle traced her spine as she turned onto Spiegelgasse, and she thought, not for the first time, that the city had a way of washing secrets to the surface.
She walked with the unhurried gait of a woman who had nowhere to be and everything to hide. At fifty-eight, Marta had learned to disappear in plain sight—a retired Swiss bank archivist, they assumed, or a widow with a modest pension. The gray wool coat, the sensible shoes, the way she nodded at the butcher and the florist without ever stopping to chat. It was a performance honed over five years of quiet penance, and she had grown so good at it that she almost believed it herself.
Almost.
Her apartment on the third floor smelled of coffee and old paper. She hung her coat on the hook by the door, wiped the rain from her face, and stood for a moment in the dark of the hallway, listening. The building was silent except for the distant hum of a refrigerator and the drip of water from the eaves. She checked the lock twice, then the window latch in the kitchen, then the one in the bedroom. The ritual took ninety seconds.
