Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have probably already read the wrong books. The ones that tell you to "be greedy when others are fearful," or promise a "simple three-step method to beats the market," or fill pages with charts of past performance as if the future were a horse you could back. You have maybe taken a "risk tolerance" quiz that told you what kind of investor you are, as if that were an immutable personality type. And you have tried. You have rebalanced, adjusted, trimmed, and bought the dip. And yet the sum of all that effort, the active decisions and the anxious checking, has probably produced a feeling of busyness rather than a feeling of control.

The reason is not that you are not smart enough. The reason is that most of what is commonly taught about investing is either incomplete, misleading, or actively backwards. It is a set of practices designed for a world that no longer exists, built for the convenience of the financial services industry, or borrowed from situations that have nothing to do with your life. The biggest lie is the idea that investing is about picking the right thing at the right moment. That framing puts the entire burden on a fleeting act of prediction, and it fails almost everyone who tries it.
