Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works
You bought the book. You downloaded the app. You even tried the trick where you draw a line down the middle of the page to force your eyes to the center, hoping your peripheral vision would just pick up the rest. And it didn't work. Not really. You were reading, sure, but the comprehension went out the window, and you found yourself flipping back two paragraphs to check if you caught the meaning. Soon after, you gave up, feeling mildly stupid. Let me be clear about something right now: you are not stupid. The advice you were fed is what is stupid.
The common wisdom about speed reading is a collection of well-meaning but mostly ineffective gimmicks. The worst offender, the one that has cost more people time than any other, is the obsession with physical eye movement. You will hear that you read too slowly because your eyes stop too often and "fixate" on too many small groups of words. You will be told to expand your peripheral vision or to sweep your eyes across the page in an S-shape to force them to move faster. The logic seems sound: the eyes see, the brain reads. Therefore, faster eyes should equal a faster brain.
This is the fundamental miscalculation that wastes your time. Your eyes are not the bottleneck. If you watch an experienced speed reader, their eyes still make numerous saccades, which are those natural quick jumps
