Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

Let me start with a confession that will annoy you: I have been the person who ruined a trip with poor health decisions. I have also watched dozens of other travelers do the same thing, in real time, often making the exact same mistake I made. And I have read more than my share of travel health advice that was, frankly, useless. That includes advice from medical professionals.

That premise is that the main risk to a traveler is exotic, rare, or terrifying - something requiring a special vaccine, a peculiar insect, or a freak accident. Because of this premise, the advice you get from most sources is a scattershot of anxiety and trivia. You are told to pack hand sanitizer, but not told how to think about water in a country where the tap is suspect. You are told to get travel insurance, but not how to decide what kind of coverage actually matters for your itinerary. You are told to "be careful" about food, but nobody specifies what careful means when your host insists you try the street stall that smells amazing.
