So you just heard the words. "Crohn's colitis." Maybe you were expecting "irritable bowel" or "a weird stomach bug" or nothing at all. And instead, you got a medical term you've never heard before, spoken by a doctor who was probably busy and didn't have an hour to sit with you while your brain tried to catch up. So now you're here, probably scared, definitely confused, and wondering inside your head: What is this, and what does it mean for the rest of my life?

Let's answer that first question plainly, from the top. Crohn's colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD. "Inflammatory" is the key word there — it's not an infection, it's not food poisoning, and it's not something you did to yourself. It's a condition where your own immune system, which is supposed to be your body's defense force, gets confused and starts attacking parts of your digestive system. That attack causes inflammation — swelling, redness, pain — inside your gut.
