The Complete Handbook of Book Lights

Finally a book light reference that doesn't read like a listicle. Chapter 1 alone - the breakdown of luminous flux versus lux and why CRI matters for reading fine print - was worth the money. I'm a night-shift nurse and I read before bed every night, and after following the selection criteria in Chapter 3, I replaced my old light with something that actually makes reading comfortable for more than 20 minutes. I've already ordered a second copy for my brother who runs a used bookstore.

It's a solid reference, but I would have liked more photographs or diagrams. The text is clear, and the maintenance chapter is genuinely useful - I fixed a flickering clip-on light using the troubleshooting table. But the book reads a bit like a technical manual, and it was dense in places. The business chapter was interesting but I found it thin - I was hoping for more specific numbers on margins. It's not a book you read cover to cover, but it's a good reference to keep on the shelf.

I bought this as a gift for a friend who is a book conservator, but I ended up reading most of it myself. The technical chapters are thorough, and I learned a lot about battery chemistry I didn't know. However, the book is very much a reference manual and not a pleasurable read. A lot of the specifications, like the exact lumen ranges for different tasks, felt repetitive by chapter three. That said, the glossary at the end is excellent and I've dog-eared quite a few pages.

I picked this up because I wanted to start a small reselling business on the side. The business chapter alone justified the price - it walks through white-labeling and what to look for in a supplier's spec sheet versus what they claim in marketing. The maintenance and troubleshooting section is also better than anything I've found online. My only minor gripe is that some of the terminology in Chapter 2 got a bit academic for my taste, but I've been able to keep up with the glossary. A strong, practical handbook.
