The Complete Handbook of Brass Fasteners

I buy a lot of hardware for our shop and was getting tired of guessing between product data sheets. This book is a good, solid reference. I really appreciated the chapter on understanding the actual metallurgy — it finally explained why some brass parts from overseas are junk. I knocked off a star because I wish the chapter on troubleshooting had a few more photos, but the text is clear and the recommendations are practical. I've already consulted it three times this week.

As a hobbyist restorer, I have a lot of mixed hardware supplies, but never a good understanding of what was in my bins. This book changed that. The first chapter alone was worth the price — I now know what the grain structure actually does to a screw's strength. It can get a bit dry in the middle chapters, but that's how a reference should be. The glossary in the back is a lifesaver for someone like me who doesn't know all the jargon.

Finally, a reference that treats fasteners as serious engineering components and not just shelf clutter. The first chapter is an absolute masterclass — the discussion of dezincification and how it manifests in field conditions vs. lab tests gave me genuine insight I'll use. As a facilities manager, I've been burned by cheap brass hinges and stuck bolts before. Now I know what to specify and why. The business chapter is a bonus, but it's just as thorough as the rest. I will be keeping this on my desk.

This is a well-organized guide — there's clearly been a lot of thought put into the flow from the basics in Chapter 1 to the more niche topics later. I was particularly happy to find an in-depth section on installation torque values for brass, as it's one of those things that seems impossible to find online. It falls short of being a 5-star for me because it could use more side-by-side comparisons of different grades in the specs chapter, but it's definitely the best resource on my shelf right now.
