Chapter 1: Understanding Disco Balls
A disco ball is not a decorative ornament, and it is not a toy. It is a rotating optical instrument. Every mirrored facet on its surface is a precisely angled mirror that reflects a beam of light into the room. When the ball rotates, those beams sweep across the walls, ceiling, and floor, creating the effect you know as a disco ball display. Understanding this fundamental principle is the difference between hanging a chrome-covered sphere and installing a functional lighting effect that performs the way the client or the venue expects.
The device itself is mechanically simple. A sphere, covered in small mirror tiles, is attached to a motor that rotates it around its vertical axis. Light is aimed at the ball from one or more external sources. The ball reflects that light in many directions simultaneously, and rotation creates the sweeping movement. But this simplicity is deceptive. The quality and character of the light show depends on several interacting factors: the accuracy of the mirror tile placement, the flatness of those tiles, the rotation speed of the motor, the type of motor, the beam width of the external light source, the distance from the ball to the walls, and the ambient light level in the room. Each of these factors can be controlled or adjusted, but only if you understand what they do.
