The Complete Handbook of Folders & Report Covers

This is the handbook I've been looking for. As an office manager, I'm constantly bombarded with vendor catalogs full of fancy terms and glossy photos, but this book actually teaches you what's under the hood. The chapter on understanding the material basis and construction was eye-opening, and the section on why a simple score line determines whether a folder lasts or splits was immediately useful. It feels like a textbook, but an engaging one, and it has already changed how I order our supplies. Highly recommended for anyone who takes their work documents seriously.

It's a good reference, and I can appreciate the thoroughness. There's a lot of solid information on paper properties and different fastener types, and the chapters are logically laid out. My main reservation is that I felt a good portion of the chapters on choosing and installation was fairly intuitive, and I found myself skimming through some paragraphs that just restated common sense. Also, some of the technical specifications get very granular. However, the troubleshooting chapter on fixing warped covers and the glossary at the end are excellent, and I'll keep it on my shelf for those sections alone. It just wasn't always an exciting read, which is probably on me for expecting it to be.

Well, I didn't expect to give a book about file folders five stars, but this is genuinely useful. I run a small design studio and we do a lot of print work and client presentations. The chapter on installing and usage has saved us from committing some classic mistakes like overstuffing a report cover with too thick a document, which would have wrecked the hinge. I particularly appreciated the very practical mechanical reasoning given for why things fail. It didn't read like a list of facts that where all equally important; there was a clear sense of what actually mattered. The book earns its place next to our other reference materials, and I've already recommended it to several colleagues.
