This is the book I wish existed ten years ago when I started guiding. The chapter on understanding vests covers the real-world mechanics of load distribution and pocket layout in a way that's immediately applicable. I've already recommended it to my entire guide staff. It's thorough and clearly written, but I felt the author could have been more decisive in the selection chapter. There's a lot of information, which is good, but sometimes it felt like I was reading a product specification sheet rather than getting a direct answer about which vest to buy. The maintenance and troubleshooting section is genuinely useful, though, and I did learn how to fix a broken zipper pull.

The future trends section is also thoughtful, not speculative fluff.

There is some solid info here, and I can tell the author knows their stuff, especially regarding the history of the design. But I found the tone a bit dry and academic in places. I was hoping for more of an 'insider's perspective' on how different brands actually perform in extreme conditions, not just a description of their specifications. It's good, just not as lively as I'd hoped.

However, it felt like some of the information on brands is already dated, and the glossary, while helpful, could be expanded.
