Chapter 1: Understanding Hygrometers

At its core, a hygrometer is an instrument that measures the amount of water vapor in a gas, most commonly the air around us. While this sounds straightforward, the execution is anything but. Water vapor behaves differently from other gases, interacting with surfaces, changing state, and exerting pressure in ways that make its measurement prone to error. To use a hygrometer well, you need to understand what it is actually measuring and why that measurement is so easy to get wrong.

Let us begin with the most common term you will encounter: relative humidity, often abbreviated as RH. Relative humidity is not a direct measure of the amount of water in the air. Instead, it is a ratio. It expresses the current partial pressure of water vapor in the air as a percentage of the maximum saturation pressure that the air can hold at the same temperature and pressure. In simpler terms, it is a measure of how close the air is to being completely saturated with water vapor, compared to its capacity at that specific moment.

The key word here is "capacity." Warm air can hold significantly more water vapor than cold air. At 30°C, air can hold roughly three times as much water vapor as it can at 0°C before reaching saturation.
