About this book

Moisture control is a hidden prerequisite for the longevity of almost everything we build, store, or preserve. Yet, the products used to achieve it are often chosen based on habit or price rather than a genuine understanding of their capabilities. The Complete Handbook of Moisture Absorbers fixes that. This book cuts through the marketing to provide a rigorous, practical reference for anyone who buys, uses, or sells these products, looking at them not as simple household commodities but as engineered solutions to a specific physical problem.

The book begins by establishing the physics of humidity and how different materials - from silica gel and calcium chloride to activated alumina and molecular sieves - actually capture water vapor. It explains the critical difference between adsorption and absorption and introduces the performance metrics like moisture capacity and adsorption rate that matter when choosing a product. Subsequent chapters provide a framework for selecting the right absorber for your specific situation, offering rules of thumb for sizing a unit to a space, and a detailed examination of installation, placement, and maintenance best practices that ensure peak performance.

Recognizing that many readers have a commercial interest, the handbook also contains a dedicated section on the business opportunities surrounding moisture absorbers, from reselling and contracting to private labeling and consulting. It concludes with a look at emerging trends in materials, regulations, and smart technology, alongside a curated glossary and an FAQ that addresses real-world problems. Whether you are protecting a warehouse of inventory, restoring a flood-damaged home, or just trying to keep a classic car from rusting, this book provides the depth of knowledge you need to make the right choices with confidence.

I've purchased a lot of moisture absorbers over the years for our warehouse, and I'll be honest, I was mostly guessing. This book gave me a proper framework. I finally understand why the cheap clay desiccant packs in our inventory didn't work as well as the calcium chloride I was using. The chapter on sizing is worth the price alone. I do wish there were a few more real-world case studies with specific measurements on the actual effect on humidity levels, but the technical breakdown of the materials is excellent.

It's a very thorough reference, no doubt. I appreciated that it goes beyond the basics, especially the business chapter. However, the technical level can get a bit dense for a hobbyist. The section on the physics and the various types of silica gel, for example, felt more like what an engineer would need than someone just trying to preserve a vintage car collection. I had to read some parts a couple of times. The troubleshooting guide for common problems is the most practical part for me. Overall, it's a solid book, but maybe a bit overkill for a casual user like me.
