About this book

The oboe is a delicate machine. Most of its sound is a product of its precise, intricate keywork, and that keywork fails more often than any professional player would like. If you play, repair, teach, or sell oboes, you need to understand the parts themselves: what they are made of, how they interact, and why small differences in tolerance and material matter. This handbook is a practical grounding in that knowledge, built for the workbench, the studio, and the shop floor.

★★★★

This is the first book that actually shows me what the inside of my oboe should look like and work like. The chapter on troubleshooting was helpful when I had a sticky E-flat key the morning of a rehearsal; I could find the likely culprit (a worn pad) and the right fix without tearing the whole thing apart. I wish the brand comparison section had a little more detail on the business side, but for a player who does their own basic maintenance it's worth the shelf space.

★★★★★

It is a comprehensive manual, no doubt, but I found the writing a bit dry and the material dense if you aren't already a technician. The section on installation is excellent, but the initial chapter feels like it could have been an article, not a 2,700-word dissertation. I got the information I needed to replace a spring, which was the point, but this is a reference book to consult, not one to read cover to cover.
