The Complete Handbook of Pet Training Pads

I've been buying pads for our boarding facility for six years, usually just going with whatever's on sale. This book made me realize I was paying for marketing hype, not performance. The chapter on basis weight and polymer content changed how I read a spec sheet, and the cost-per-use calculation in Chapter 3 is something I've already applied to our monthly orders. I've recommended it to two other facility owners.

Finally, a serious reference on a product everyone treats as an afterthought. The breakdown of how the absorbent core actually works was worth the price alone. The business chapter covered private labeling without the usual fluff, just the real steps and the margins you can expect. The troubleshooting guide in Chapter 5 is the kind of thing you keep on a shelf for when a shipment of pads starts weeping on you.

Good solid reference overall. I train service dogs and go through a lot of pads, and the technical sections are genuinely useful. The chapter on choosing between grades for different age and health profiles was practical. It lost a star because I felt the troubleshooting section could have been more detailed on the odor-control chemistry, but that's a specific gripe. Worth having on the desk.

It was fine, but I was expecting more depth in the brand comparison section. The book deliberately avoids saying which brands are good, and while I understand the reasoning, it would have been more useful to have some specific teardown examples with actual brands. The technical chapters are excellent, don't get me wrong. But if you're looking for a quick 'this is what to buy' answer, this isn't that book. It's a textbook, not a shopping list.

As a purchasing manager for a vet clinic, I found the maintenance and storage chapter incredibly informative. We used to buy in bulk and sometimes a pallet would sit too long, and we'd get pads that were brittle. The section on shelf life and why polymer cores degrade explained the 'brittle pad' problem we were seeing. The supply chain and private-label chapter also gave me ideas for a side business with our clinic's flea market donation drives.

The usage protocol advice in Chapter 4 on positioning and anchoring the pad was immediately actionable. The book is dry, but it's a reference book, so that's expected and appreciated.

Solid book. The first half is a dense technical read, exactly what I wanted. The comparison table in Chapter 2 helped me visually isolate what mattered. My only issue is that the book is very US-centric in terms of market size and regulatory discussion, and I have to import stuff to Canada which adds another layer of complexity. That's a nitpick though. I got the answers I needed.
