About this book

Your saxophone is a precision instrument that lives in a hostile environment: your own breath. Every time you play, you deposit moisture, heat, and acidic residue into a mechanism built to tolerances of thousandths of an inch. The Complete Handbook of Saxophone Care & Cleaning is the only reference you need to understand and control that environment, ensuring your instrument plays consistently and holds its value for decades.

This book is written for working players and serious hobbyists who want straight answers, not marketing speak. It covers the real-world science of how pads, corks, springs, and metal alloys react to use, and gives you specific, tested procedures for cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting every system on the horn. From the proper way to swab a curved neck to the nuanced differences between cleaning lacquered and unlacquered bodies, every procedure is laid out in clear, actionable steps.

Going beyond the basics, the handbook also addresses the business side of saxophone care for the professional. It evaluates the market positioning of major brands and suppliers, outlines viable service and resale business models, and looks at the future of materials and manufacture. With sections dedicated to troubleshooting common problems and a glossary of specialist terms, this is the essential desktop reference for anyone who owns, plays, or works on saxophones.

I've been playing for 25 years and thought I knew how to clean a saxophone. This book immediately corrected a bad habit I had with swabbing my curved neck, which I now know can cause unnecessary wear on the octave mechanism. The section on business opportunities for techs is a nice bonus, though I found the troubleshooting chapter a bit light if you're looking for deep repair manual detail. Still, it's the best overall care guide I've found for the working player.

As a high school band director, I buy cleaning supplies for my program and this book has already paid for itself. The specifications chapter is super helpful for distinguishing between the cheap swabs that fall apart and the ones that actually do the job, and the storage advice has helped me get through the humid summer months without pads rotting. I took off one star because I wish it had even more specific product recommendations for budgeting, but the general principles are solid and it's well written.

This is the reference book I wish I had when I started repairing saxophones 10 years ago. It doesn't just tell you to clean your horn; it explains why, what happens to pads and corks when you don't, and how to fix it when things go wrong. The chapter on understanding the actual care process is excellent for training new technicians, and I would honestly recommend it to my best clients who are curious about what is happening inside their horn. A truly valuable, sensible read.
