The Complete Handbook of Septic Tank & Cesspool Treatments

I was hoping for a bit more on cesspool-specific treatments since that's mostly what I work with, and the book does lean toward traditional tanks. That said, the chapter on reading a bacterial label and understanding CFUs was worth the purchase alone. It's grounded and practical, not a sales pitch.

I've been pumping tanks for twelve years and I still found the troubleshooting chapter in Chapter 1 and the later breakdown of chemical vs. biological treatments genuinely useful. The author clearly knows how a tank actually behaves. My only gripe is a few diagrams would have made the hydraulics discussion clearer.

Finally, a reference that treats me like an intelligent adult. The explanation of the anaerobic digester and the role of the scum layer is the clearest I've read, and it instantly changed how I explain treatments to my customers. The book doesn't shy away from saying when a treatment is a waste of money.

Decent book, but I felt it could have spent more time on different soil types and how they impact treatment choice. I also disagree with the fairly dismissive take on some additives. It reads a bit like the author has a chip on their shoulder against certain products. Still, the core info is solid and well-organized.

This is the handbook I wish I'd had when I bought my first commercial rental with a failing leach field. The initial chapter pulls back the curtain on what's actually happening inside the tank, which saved me from buying expensive nonsense. The section on solid VS scum layer management is worth its weight in gold for property managers.

The content is accurate and the tone is nice and neutral, but it felt a little dense for someone like me who just wants to know what to pour down the toilet. I guess that's my fault for buying a 'Complete Handbook.' It's informative, just a bit more than I needed, and the writing is dry in places.

I docked a star because it didn't cover some of the more niche restoration products for completely matted biomats, but for general use, it's a very strong manual.

It's a bit academic in places, but I'll keep it on my shelf for the business expansion chapter alone.
