About this book

Wall and ceiling tile is everywhere: in commercial kitchens, hospital corridors, residential bathrooms, and retail spaces. Yet most of what's written about it is either a sales pitch for a specific brand or a collection of forum rumors. This handbook cuts through that noise to give professionals, businesses, and serious hobbyists a clear, engineering-first understanding of the product category.

Built with a practical, no-nonsense approach, the book walks you through the full life cycle of a tile installation. It starts with material science and product types, shows you how to read specifications and choose the right tile for the conditions you face, and then delivers a thorough, step-by-step guide to installation. It doesn't stop there: you'll also learn how to properly maintain a tile installation, diagnose and fix the common problems that arise months or years later, and understand who the key players in the supply chain are and how they position themselves.

For those looking to turn this knowledge into revenue, a full chapter is dedicated to concrete business opportunities, including reselling, private labeling, and service-based offerings. The final chapters look ahead to the future of the industry and highlight the standards and organizations that matter. A detailed glossary and FAQ round out the volume, making it a dependable reference you'll consult on every project.

I bought this because I do a lot of commercial kitchen and restroom renovations, and I was hoping for a deep dive on installation and spec'ing. The chapters on choosing the right tile and business opportunities were solid and gave me a few new ideas for how to quote jobs. Where it fell short for me was the installation chapter, which felt a bit too high-level for an experienced tiler. I know some contractors that would get a lot more out of it than I did. Overall, a good reference to have on the shelf, but I skipped a few parts.
