About this book

You've seen the photos of the Rock Islands and the jellyfish lake. But what is Palau actually like to walk around in, to eat in, to live in? This guide skips the generic 'land of contrasts' nonsense and gets down to specifics: what genuinely surprises you on arrival, the social rules that actually matter, and the everyday costs that budget calculators online get wrong.

It's a useful, honest intro to Palau, but I wish it had a few more concrete examples. The First Impressions chapter is spot-on about the smell of the air and the dual nature of Koror - that's real. I found the chapters on money and getting around the most practical, though I'd still need to double-check current prices online. It's a solid starting point, but it left me wanting more specifics, especially on the local food scene. A bit more detail on actual dishes to order would have pushed it to 4 stars.
