A 10-Day Starter Plan to Learn Archery Basics, Build Confidence, and Decide If It's for You
by Alumigogo Books
Chapter 1: First Day
Let's be honest about what you're about to do: you're going to walk into a place you've never been, and you're going to ask to hold a weapon. It's going to feel a little awkward, but that's okay. The entire point of today is not to become an archer. It's to figure out what the heck an archer even does.
Before you go anywhere, check the Internet for "public archery range" or "archery club" near you. You're looking for a place that offers beginner sessions or lane rentals. You don't need to find a fancy indoor range with air conditioning. A local club with a weekend open shoot, a state park range, or a dedicated archery store with a range in the back are all perfect. You are looking for a place that is open, safe, and lets you rent the equipment. Do not buy a bow yet. Do not even think about buying a bow yet. You need to shoot first, and you need to do that with a rental bow.
When you arrive, walk in and tell the person at the counter that you're a complete beginner and you'd like to try a basic recurve bow. This is the classic wooden or metal bow with a single curve shape, the one that you probably picture when someone says "bow and arrow." If they ask what you want to do, say you're looking for an "intro to archery" session or just to rent a lane
