About this book

You just heard the words 'neurodevelopmental disorder with dysmorphic facies and distal limb anomalies.' Your doctor said them, and everything after that is a blur. Maybe you've already gone down the internet rabbit hole and come out more terrified than before. Maybe you don't even know how to spell the name of the thing your child has. Either way, you're in the right place.

This is not a medical textbook. It is not a lecture. It is a clear, compassionate, and occasionally irreverent guide written for the person who just got thrown into a world of unfamiliar terms and frightening possibilities. We will break down what this diagnosis really means — what happens in the body, what symptoms you might see, how it's diagnosed, and what you can actually do about it. We will talk about genetics, treatment options, day-to-day life, and how to be a caregiver without losing yourself in the process.

You are not alone, and you are not expected to become a medical expert overnight. This guide will help you ask the right questions, find the right support, and — most importantly — remember that the person behind the diagnosis is still the same person you've always known. No false promises, no catastrophising, just practical help for a difficult journey.

This is a solid first step for someone just getting the diagnosis. I wish it had been handed to me in the doctor's office rather than finding it later. It's honest and clear, and the chapter on why it happened helped me stop blaming myself — I really needed that. But I did feel like some parts skimmed over the harder details, and I wanted more depth on day-to-day management. Still, as an introduction and a way to get your bearings, it does its job. I'd recommend it to a friend in the same situation, but tell them to also seek out a good genetic counselor.
