About this book

You just got a diagnosis that sounds like a tongue twister and feels like a brick to the gut: overhydrated hereditary stomatocytosis. Now what? This guide is written for you — not for medical students, not for doctors, but for the person sitting in the waiting room or lying awake at night, trying to figure out what the hell just happened to your body (or your child's body).

I cried reading the first chapter, but the good kind of crying — the kind where you finally feel like someone understands what's happening inside your body. My doctor gave me the diagnosis and disappeared, and this guide filled in every gap. The part about red blood cells swelling up like overfilled water balloons finally made it click for me. I've read it twice and I'm buying copies for my whole family.

Solid guide overall. I'm a caregiver for my spouse who has this condition, and Chapter 7 on what not to say was genuinely helpful — I caught myself doing some of those things. That said, I wanted more depth on the surgical options and long-term outcomes. Chapter 5 felt a bit surface-level compared to the rest. But for a first read after diagnosis, it's definitely better than the stuff my doctor gave me.
