The Birth of Cities Between the Tigris and Euphrates, Ubaid and Sumerian peoples built the first true cities like Uruk and Ur. Here humanity invented cuneiform writing, monumental ziggurats, and the administrative systems that made civilization possible.

Assyria and Babylon Ascendant The Assyrians forged a formidable military empire ruled from Nineveh, only to be toppled by a Median-Babylonian alliance. Nebuchadnezzar II then raised Babylon to legendary splendor, home to soaring walls and, by tradition, its hanging gardens.
Conquest and Legacy Cyrus the Great absorbed Babylon into the Persian Empire, and Alexander's victory at Gaugamela brought Greek rule before the Parthians closed the ancient chapter. Yet Mesopotamia's inventions—writing, law, astronomy, the wheel—shaped every civilization that followed.
