The Age of the Samurai Feudal Japan begins as power slips from the Heian court to the warrior class. The Minamoto victory in the Genpei War and Yoritomo's shogunate in 1192 established military rule that would define Japan for centuries.
Invasions and Upheaval The Kamakura shogunate weathered two Mongol invasions, saved by the legendary "kamikaze" divine winds. But instability followed, and the Ashikaga shogunate ushered in an era of cultural flowering shadowed by growing conflict.
The Warring States The Onin War shattered central authority, plunging Japan into the Sengoku period of rival warlords. The arrival of Portuguese firearms transformed warfare as figures like Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi fought to reunify the land.
Unification and the Long Peace Tokugawa Ieyasu's win at Sekigahara sealed a new order, launching over 250 years of Edo-era stability and isolation—until the Meiji Restoration of 1868 swept away the samurai world for good.
