War Erupts The Confederate assault on Fort Sumter in 1861 launched the deadliest conflict in American history. Titanic clashes at Antietam and Gettysburg, alongside Sherman's scorched-earth march through Georgia, revealed the staggering human cost of a war fought over the country's soul.
Emancipation and Victory Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation transformed the war's purpose, tying Union victory to the destruction of slavery. Lee's surrender at Appomattox in 1865 ended the fighting, but Lincoln's assassination days later cast a shadow over the peace.
A Nation Reborn The 13th Amendment abolished slavery across the entire United States, redefining American freedom. Yet the promise of Reconstruction faltered, ending in 1877 and leaving a struggle for equality that would echo for generations.
