A Kingdom in Crisis By 1789, France was crushed by debt, famine, and rigid inequality. When the Estates-General met, the Third Estate refused to be silenced, and the storming of the Bastille lit the fuse of a revolution that would consume the old order.
Rights, Republic, and Regicide The Declaration of the Rights of Man proclaimed liberty and equality as universal ideals. Within a few explosive years the monarchy fell, the Republic was born, and King Louis XVI met the guillotine — proof that no crown was safe from the will of the people.
Terror and Reaction The revolution turned inward. Under Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety, the Reign of Terror sent thousands to the blade in the name of virtue. His own fall in 1794 ended the bloodshed and ushered in the uneasy rule of the Directory.
The Rise of Napoleon Amid instability, a brilliant young general seized his moment. Napoleon's coup of 1799 closed the revolutionary era, and by 1804 he crowned himself Emperor — carrying the revolution's ideals, and armies, across Europe.
